Neoboard Scammers Guide
The Neoboards are a great addition to Neopets. You can chat, find
help, roleplay, get things rated, find pets to adopt and a lot of other things.
Sometimes you do have to be careful though. This guide will explain what to look out
for and what means what.
The neoboard scammers are everywhere. This guide should hopefully make you aware of
what sort of awful and silly things they do.
Scammers: They’re out to get your neopoints, items, passwords, pets and almost
anything they can get their hands on. There’s heaps of ways they do this and new
ones are always popping up every so often. If you have a bit of Neopets experience
you can tell which ones are valid and which are void. Here are a few common ways:
“Go Here! You enter your username and password and you get free paintbrushes and
neopoints!”
1.
First; look at the link. If they’re asking you to go off Neopets, it’s not real.
2.
Second; if they claim that TNT told them this or that they’re TNT, don’t believe
them. Why would TNT encourage people to cheat on their own website?
3.
Third: The rules quote “Impersonating Neostaff or claiming to have special influence
with members of the Neopets Staff. Remember—Neopets staff will never contact you
through instant messengers, phone calls, private neomails or personal emails. The
only way we will contact you is through the neopets.com email address or from the
account, theneopetsteam. And we will never ever ask you for your password!”
4. Fourth; one of the most obvious, why would TNT need your password to give you
points or items? You’re already logged in if you’re on the Neoboards!
Pet Sitting. I’ve been struck by one of these guys but thankfully didn’t fall for
it.
Most of the neomails go like this:
Hey! I’ve seen you on the Neoboards and thought you were a caring, good Neopian. I’m
going on holiday and I need someone to babysit my account and pets for me. I thought
you would be a good choice. I’ll pay you 30,000np (or higher) and you can take any
paintbrush you want from my inventory. You’ll need to feed and play with them
everyday.
I‘ll be away for 5 days (or whatever).
If you agree to this please neomail me back!
So if you neomail them back saying Sure! I’ll babysit your pets; you get a neomail:
Cool; thanks for agreeing to look after my pets.
I’ll give you my password.
To make it fair I think you should give me your password too.
You send me yours first and I’ll send mine after.
If by this stage you’re still fooled; you send your password to them.
Ok! My password is:
Imsosillytogiveoutmypw
They usually don’t respond after that. You might not hear anything from them again.
You’ll probably notice that some (or all) of your neopoints are gone and as are most
of your items. Your pets might even be missing as well.
That would be awful and it all happened because you were on the boards and someone
picked up your username. There’s nothing you can do about that. But if someone does
neomail you saying that; report them immediately. They may be neomailing several
people at a time.
Another newer scam that has been noticed by a few neopians recently on the Pound
board is similar to pet sitting but I’m not quite sure what exactly happens but it
does go something like this;
The scammer tricks you into sending them your pet to look after. They only went for
Painted, Limited Edition or rare pets. Currently I don’t have a clue how they did it
but I hope to find out.
Anyway these people send their pets to them possibly on a promise of being returned
or traded for another.
The scammer then takes the pet never gives it back or releases it into the pound
where anyone could get it.
Bye bye Draiks & Krawks and see you later Cybunnies.
So be aware of this and never give you pet to anyone unless you’ve arranged a
transfer using TNT’s method where you can’t lose your pet (or so it has been proven
up until this point so far).
If you see other people falling for this; neomail them and tell them what is
actually happening.
This is another newer one but more serious. A person creates a board claiming to
give a link to Tarla (that Ixi from Terror Mountain). They post the link; people
click on it thinking they’re getting some glorious gift from Tarla. They find a page
with nothing on it and link “Oh Well! That was rather weird!” Little do they know
that page was a Cookie Grabber. I won’t go into details on them but I will say that
they are very bad and can do things to your computer.
This next one is incredibly rude and offensive. You hear of people getting Terminal
Illnesses. They get told they’ve got however many months/weeks to live. Imagine how
awful that would be?
Anyway these spammers make a board saying “I have a Terminal Illness, I have only 1
month to live!” Good, kind-hearted people see this board title and think “Oh! Poor
them, I’ll click on this board”
The board simply says that they’ve got a terminal illness of cancer or another
disease and that they’ve never had a paintbrush and don’t have time in their life to
earn the money for the paintbrush.
Your alarm bells for a scammer should be up straight away. If you had only a few
months to live would you make a board drawing attention like that to yourself,
making it sound like you’re proud that you’re going to die soon? And begging people
to give up their belongings? I shouldn’t think so.
These people send over paintbrushes and other items. The scammer pretends to weep
(how you do that online, does puzzle me) with thanks. Later he laughs evilly to
himself. He’s not sick; he has a full life ahead of him. He’s just scammed innocent
people out of their items. That just shows you how low scammers will go to get
items.
There are other ways scammers try to scam you. All I say is; don’t fall for it. If
you’re unsure make a board on another topic and ask for help; neomail a helpful
friend, refer to this guide and others and ask your fellow guild members what they
think.
Doing that; you should stay safe on the Neoboards. Have Fun!
